A Glimpse of the Journey

    Why Tanzania

This journey grew from a personal visit to Tanzania that left a deep impression.

The landscapes are breathtaking — but what stayed with us most were the human moments.

Cooking in local homes, visiting a children’s orphanage, learning from Maasai elders, and witnessing wildlife in its natural habitat reminded us how powerful travel can be when it connects us to both people and place.

While the Camino will always be at the heart of Camino Yoga Retreats, this journey carries the same spirit of mindful travel, reflection, and meaningful connection.

    A Different Kind of Journey

TANZANIA: A MINDFUL JOURNEY THROUGH PLACE, CULTURE & SELF

TANZANIA: A MINDFUL JOURNEY THROUGH PLACE, CULTURE & SELF

TANZANIA: A MINDFUL JOURNEY THROUGH PLACE, CULTURE & SELF

This Tanzania journey is designed for travelers seeking a deeper connection with place, culture, and themselves. Rather than focusing solely on wildlife viewing, this experience blends meaningful cultural exchange, beautiful landscapes, and moments of quiet reflection — creating a travel experience that is both grounding and expansive.

Our journey begins in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, where we settle into the rhythm of Tanzania through village visits, a waterfall hike, coffee traditions, and time spent with local communities. Along the way we experience the warmth of Tanzanian hospitality, the richness of everyday life, and the beauty of moving through a place with intention.

The second half of the journey brings us into some of East Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes. We explore the Ngorongoro Crater and the vast plains of the Serengeti, where wildlife moves freely across the horizon and the pace of life slows to the rhythms of nature.

Throughout the journey we weave in optional yoga, mindfulness, and quiet moments for reflection — creating space to absorb the experience rather than simply move through it.

TANZANIA: A MINDFUL JOURNEY THROUGH PLACE, CULTURE & SELF

Guests arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) on January 15.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted and transferred to our hotel in the town of Moshi, located in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Our first evening together includes a welcome dinner where we gather as a group, settle in, and enjoy our first night in Tanzania.

Our journey concludes on January 28. After our final evening together, we provide a transfer from our accommodations back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for departing flights

    Travel Within Tanzania

During the journey we travel through northern Tanzania by private vehicle, allowing us to experience the changing landscapes between Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Highlands, and the Serengeti.

After our time in the Serengeti, we return by bush flight, offering a spectacular aerial view of the plains and a memorable conclusion to our safari experience.

All transportation within Tanzania during the retreat is arranged and included as part of the journey.

    Accommodations

Is this journey right for you?

Is this journey right for you?

We stay in a thoughtfully curated collection of properties that reflect the landscapes and culture of northern Tanzania. Each has been selected for its character, comfort, and connection to the surrounding environment.

    Boutique Hotel in Moshi

Our journey begins in Moshi at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. We stay at a charming boutique hotel surrounded by lush gardens — a welcoming place to rest after travel and settle into the rhythm of Tanzania.

    Amani Light Eco-Retreat

During the cultural portion of the journey we stay at Amani Light, a peaceful eco-retreat located within a rural Maasai community.

Cottages are inspired by traditional boma-style architecture, and the retreat operates off-grid using solar power and simple bucket showers with water heated each evening.

While intentionally simple, the setting is peaceful and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape. Many guests find this immersive experience becomes one of the most meaningful parts of the journey.

    Lodge in the Ngorongoro Highlands

Near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area we stay at a welcoming lodge in the green highlands surrounding Karatu — a beautiful place to relax before our safari into the Ngorongoro Crater.

    Safari Camp in Ndutu

In the Ndutu region we stay in a tented safari camp where spacious canvas tents with private ensuite bathrooms offer the classic East African safari experience.

    Serengeti Safari Lodge

Our Serengeti stay is at a luxurious safari lodge overlooking the vast plains, offering beautiful gathering spaces and exceptional comfort in the heart of the Serengeti.

    Boutique Hotel in Arusha

At the end of the journey we return to Arusha and stay at a comfortable boutique hotel — a relaxed setting to unwind and reflect before departing Tanzania.

    A Note on Accommodations

This journey intentionally includes a variety of lodging experiences — from boutique hotels and eco-retreats to safari lodges and tented camps, each chosen to reflect the landscapes we encounter along the way.

Throughout the journey we balance exploration with moments of rest and reflection. Cultural experiences, time in nature, and the extraordinary landscapes of northern Tanzania create an elevated travel experience that is both adventurous and grounding.

    • You enjoy small group travel that feels personal, warm, and supportive.

This journey may not be the right fit if:

    • You are looking for a fast-paced safari focused only on wildlife sightings.
    • You prefer luxury resort travel with little cultural interaction.
    • You are uncomfortable with remote destinations or varied lodging styles.
    • You prefer independent travel rather than a small guided group experience.

    The Journey

    – January 16 – Arrival & Rest
A relaxed day to recover from travel with time by the pool, optional yoga, and the opportunity to visit Children of Kilimanjaro Orphanage (COKO).

    – January 17 – Kilimanjaro

    – January 18 – Village Traditions
Travel into the Kilimanjaro countryside for a hike to Materuni Waterfall followed by a traditional coffee experience and local lunch. In the afternoon we continue to Amani Light, a peaceful eco-retreat in the Kilimanjaro region, where we settle in for the next few days of the journey. In the evening we gather for a sunset yoga session in the retreat’s boma-style shala.

    – January 19 – Maasai Culture
A morning walk through the Maasai community offers time with a young Maasai warrior who shares stories of tradition and daily life. We also meet Maasai women and spend time inside a traditional boma, offering a glimpse into everyday life in the village. After lunch, the afternoon is open to enjoy time at the retreat, including a complimentary massage for each guest. In the evening we gather around the fire for a drumming circle.

    – January 20 – Food & Craft Traditions
Begin the day with a guided visit to the bustling outdoor market in Moshi, gathering fresh ingredients with a local Chagga guide. Later, we divide into smaller groups to enjoy a traditional cooking experience with Chagga hosts and visit local fabric shops and tailors. Guests may choose their own fabric and be fitted for a custom garment by a local tailor.

    – January 21 – Journey to the Highlands
We depart the Kilimanjaro region and travel toward the Ngorongoro Highlands, stopping in Arusha to visit Shanga, a social enterprise that employs people with disabilities to create beautiful handmade crafts. – January 22 – Ngorongoro Crater Safari
A full-day safari exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary wildlife ecosystems in Africa. In the evening we arrive at our tented safari camp in the Ndutu region.

    – January 23 – Entering the Serengeti
Travel across the plains into the Serengeti and settle into our luxury safari lodge. This time of year often coincides with the Great Migration calving season, when vast herds of wildebeest gather on the southern Serengeti plains.

Morning and afternoon wildlife safaris across the vast Serengeti plains, with time to relax and enjoy the lodge. Optional yoga sessions will be offered by Laura and Patti, and spa services are available at the lodge for guests who wish to book treatments.
