The Story Behind Our Swallow

July 21, 2026

Post Date:

This past spring, during our Camino Portugués retreat, our group took a day trip to Sintra and Pena Palace with a local guide. At one point, she shared a story that quietly settled in the back of my mind. I couldn’t tell you whether it was over coffee or on the drive to Sintra, but somehow it followed me all the way home.

Many families in Portugal display ceramic swallows beside their front door, she explained. The swallow symbolizes love, family, loyalty, and safe journeys. Every year these small birds travel incredible distances before returning home, making them a symbol of those who leave, explore the world, and eventually find their way back again.

She also shared that the number of swallows displayed often represents the family living inside the home.

I don’t know why that story resonated with me.

It simply did.

Maybe it was because I’d spent years walking Caminos. Maybe it was because I understood what it felt like to leave home and return changed. Or maybe some stories quietly settle into our hearts long before we understand why.

A few weeks later, after returning home, we officially began rebranding Camino Yoga Retreats.

For nearly two years, our company had been evolving. What had begun as guiding people along the Camino de Santiago was slowly growing into something much bigger. We were welcoming new co-hosts, planning our first journey to Tanzania, dreaming about Scotland, and beginning to imagine what Bali might become.

The Camino would always be our foundation, but our vision had grown beyond a single path.

As part of the creative process, our designer asked me to create a Pinterest board filled with images, colors, textures, and anything else that felt like us.

Without thinking, I stopped on an illustration of a swallow.

It wasn’t something we could use, but I immediately sent it to her.

Only then did I realize why that story from Portugal had stayed with me.

Over the following weeks, the swallow began to take on a meaning that was entirely my own.

Yes, it represented love, family, loyalty, and safe journeys, just as our guide had explained.

But I also saw movement.

Curiosity.

Freedom.

Not simply the freedom to travel, but the freedom to begin again. To remain open. To take a chance on something that feels a little uncertain. To keep becoming the person we’re meant to be.

The more I reflected on it, the more I realized the swallow represented the kind of journeys I wanted Camino Yoga Retreats to create.

Yes, we walk beautiful trails together.

But the walks have never really been the point.

They’re simply where life has room to happen.

They’re where conversations unfold over coffee and shared meals. Where strangers become friends. Where confidence quietly returns. Where people discover they’re capable of more than they imagined.

Every meaningful journey leaves something behind.

Sometimes it’s confidence.

Sometimes it’s perspective.

Sometimes it’s a friendship that lasts long after the flight home.

Sometimes it’s simply the courage to say yes to whatever comes next.

When I look at our swallow now, I don’t just see a logo.

I see movement.

I see possibility.

I see every person who has trusted us enough to join one of our journeys.

Most of all, I see a reminder that the most meaningful journeys aren’t measured in miles. They’re measured in the way they continue to shape us long after we’ve unpacked our bags.

Looking back, I don’t think we chose the swallow.

I think the swallow found us. And perhaps that’s what meaningful journeys do. They teach us to notice the birds.
